“It starts as it always does — with a story”. These poignant words open Simona’s Search, Hartford Stage’s latest play.

The three person production tackles generational trauma in an engaging 90 minutes. The show takes its audience through the protagonist’s quest for answers to not only her father’s painful past, but the ghosts that haunt her present and threaten her future. In a post-pandemic world, working on one’s trauma has become a common place pasttime, making the work all the more relevant for a “TikTok-therapized” generation.

Simona’s Search excels at illuminating the otherwise bleak topic as Simona speaks directly to the audience while walking us through her journey of self-discovery, shedding light on our ancestors’ fragile humanity. Simona’s Search asks us to give ourselves and each other grace because all too often the wounds we carry were carved into us far before we were even born.

Balancing humor with tragedy, Simona’s Search undoubtedly leaves a mark on the psyche, inviting its viewers to begin their own pursuit of truth.
