Daughters of The Dust Campaign

CAFETERIA MEDIA CHANNELS THE 1991 CULT CLASSIC, DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST, FOR SEMILLA’S NEXT +STUDIO COLLECTION.

As our team transitioned from the Technicity capsule and began planning the next collection for Semilla, we revisited an early idea that incorporated our spin on an apothecary-esque brick-and-mortar. We knew we wanted to bring products that offer everyday usage, products that often feel ritualistic. After a brief conversation about these ideas in the shop, a friend mentioned the 1991 film, Daughters of the Dust, written and directed by Julie Dash.

As a staple for black indie films, naming the next collection after Dash’s theatrical debut made immediate sense. The film’s mood, color palette, and sophistication felt harmonic with the already french-quarter-meets-victorian-parlor atmosphere created in the café by its owners. With Arthur Jafa helming the cinemaphotography, we wanted to honor the artistic direction by referencing several iconic moments for the collection’s campaign.
