BEST NEW HAVEN PIZZA OUTSIDE THE BIG THREE
A CORRECT OPINION.
Talking about New Haven pizza is like talking about the weather, a relatable topic anyone in the city can comment on. However, most people stick to discussing the big three: Modern, Pepe's, and Sally's. Many people include BAR as "The Big Four," but I don't count that odd duckling unless you like wafer-like crust that only tastes good as a break from the dance floor.
Luckily, there are many incredible New Haven pizza spots outside the favored few. With usually lower price tags, speedier pickups, and comfier settings that don't involve standing outside for more than two hours, these places are great for tasting our city's pizza while not torturing yourself. Here are my picks:
Zeneli's
Truly incredible pizza. Although they get many of the stragglers on Wooster Street who tried to go to Sally's or Pepe's, they're actually in for a better meal than they would've had. The pizza crust is like fluffy bread that sops up all the beautiful sauce, cheese, and Albanian-Italian goodness.
Est Est Est
A delicacy to me. The ecstasy of coming here after Partners, Three Sheets, or another debauchery-infused night is unmatched. The pizza is incredible, the vibes are chaotic, the turn around is quick. Never sleep on Est Est Est.
Marco Polo
Because of its proximity to Cafe Nine, I've munched cheese pizza many nights here, curling my legs up on the booth with unzipped heels on the floor. Especially if the show you went to has a great crowd, the ambiance is fantastic.
Next Door
Extremely slept on. The best is when the pizza is piping hot, so I highly recommend grabbing a spot in this giant restaurant and ordering apps. The owner, Doug, is a sweetie and city legend.
One6Three
Absolutely incredible pizza. It's a good spot when you want to dine in with pals or people-watch outside at one of the most ridiculous intersections in town. Their fried pickle chips and Caesar salad are also amazing, and their basil garden has gotten me through many meals. Pizza for the people.
Brick Oven
Unfortunately, the only times I've been to this fine establishment was when I stumbled after Three Sheets and needed pizza immediately. This means that my memories of this pizza are out of this world, perfect, spectacular. Some people have said my recollection is incorrect and the pizza is mid, but I highly disagree (at least, my drunk self would highly disagree). The slices are big, hot, and greasy. Muah.
Zuppardi's
Many say this is actually one of the best in the NHV area. It's only a slight step away from Modern's perfection and is a great one with a much shorter wait time.
Ernie's
I have to admit I haven't tried them yet, as I'm just a lowly East Rocker who hates to drive. However, I have heard stunning reviews from Westville folks, and it's on my pizza bucket list.

Good - gotta have it when it's hot but good. A great place for farm-to-table flavors and to sit out front with wine and people-watch. Get a passionfruit mousse for dessert.
