ABOUT ISSUE 20
In this issue the magazine has taken a local and global approach to explore what a city that changes like the seasons represents in a world that is hard to recognize from years past. The title is “What does New York mean today?”. This issue marks Document Journal‘s 10th anniversary. Where are emerging cultural phenomena and new ideas located? This question brought Document Journal back to the nascent punk and avant-garde art scenes of the 1970s. And it also led them to discover the literary landscape of the city. Here they discovered the animating spirit that intertwines New York’s legendary past and its unpredictable rebirth.
In Document Journal 20, Eileen Myles traces New York’s history through the creation and imminent destruction of East River Park; McKenzie Wark underscores the value of the G-line corridor as a hub of transcreative communities; Drew Zeiba explores one of life’s most important journeys and joys, sex; and, taking us back to our roots in the print media, ten writers explore the legacy of the late Joan Didion, whose singular perspective insinuated itself into the local collective consciousness in the 1960s with the publication of her seminal essay on loving and leaving New York.
